About Tasman Maritime Consulting

Maritime compliance expertise, grounded in operational experience

Tasman Maritime Consulting was established to bring genuine sea-going experience to the compliance side of the industry — helping vessel owners, operators, and management companies across New Zealand, Australia, and the South Pacific be genuinely ready for statutory audits, not just paper-compliant.

Craig Hopkins Founder & Principal Consultant
Our founding principal

Two decades at sea. Now in your corner ashore.

Craig Hopkins founded Tasman Maritime Consulting following two decades in worldwide command on commercially operated superyachts and vessels under multiple flag states — including Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, Channel Islands (Red Ensign Group), Cook Islands, and others. He holds an MCA Master 3000T (worldwide) and leads all client engagements personally.

That operational background is what sets our approach apart. ISM, ISPS, and MLC compliance is not abstract when you have sat in the captain's chair, managed an SMS day-to-day, and been the person ultimately responsible for the vessel's safe operation. When we conduct a gap analysis or internal audit, we are assessing what actually matters at sea — not just what the checklist says.

Our consulting work covers ISM, ISPS, and MLC internal audits, pre-certification gap analysis, Designated Person Ashore services, and Company Security Officer appointments — across New Zealand, Australia, and the South Pacific. All engagements are led by Craig, ensuring every client receives consistent, experienced, and properly qualified oversight from first contact through to close-out.

South Pacific

Onboard attendance available for vessels in these waters, subject to applicable entry requirements.

Our approach

Independent. Honest. Practical.

Tasman Maritime Consulting is not affiliated with any flag state, Recognised Organisation, or class society. That independence means our findings reflect the actual state of your vessel's compliance — not a commercial relationship, not an interest in the next certification cycle.

We do not claim to issue statutory certificates or conduct audits on behalf of flag states or ROs. We prepare vessels so thoroughly that when those statutory audits take place, the outcome is not in doubt. When we find a nonconformity, we say so clearly — and we help close it before the official auditor arrives.
