Two decades of worldwide command on commercially operated superyachts under Red Ensign Group flags — Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, and Channel Islands. We understand the Large Yacht Code from the inside, not from a textbook. For vessels approaching New Zealand, Australia, and the South Pacific, that makes a genuine difference.
The compliance picture for commercially operated yachts in the 24m–500GT range is frequently misunderstood — even by experienced captains entering commercial operation for the first time. Here is the practical picture.
The MCA Large Yacht Code (LY3) is the primary compliance framework for commercially operated yachts of 24 metres and above under Red Ensign Group flags — Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, Channel Islands (Guernsey, Jersey), Bermuda, and the BVI. LY3 covers construction, stability, fire protection, life-saving appliances, crew certification, operational requirements, and ISM-equivalent safety management provisions.
For yachts under 500GT operating commercially, LY3 is the applicable code — not the full ISM Code. It is specifically designed for commercially operated yachts and reflects the realities of superyacht operation in a way the IMO ISM Code does not.
For commercially operated yachts over 500GT on international voyages, the IMO ISM Code applies alongside LY3 requirements. This includes the requirement for a certified Safety Management System, a Document of Compliance at company level, a Safety Management Certificate for each vessel, and a designated Designated Person Ashore.
The ISM Code at this level is administered through your flag state's Recognised Organisation — Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, DNV, or others — and requires periodic statutory audits. Internal audits and pre-certification gap analysis are the most valuable preparation investment you can make before those statutory visits.
The ISPS Code applies to commercially operated yachts on international voyages. This requires a Ship Security Assessment, an approved Ship Security Plan, a Ship Security Officer on board, and a Company Security Officer (CSO) ashore.
For yachts on Pacific itineraries — calling at Pacific island states, PNG, or Indonesian ports — ISPS compliance is actively checked at port entry. A gap in the SSP or an unreachable CSO creates real operational problems at exactly the wrong moment.
The South Pacific is one of the world's great superyacht cruising grounds — French Polynesia, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, and onward to New Zealand and Australia. For management companies in Antibes, Palma, Monaco, or Fort Lauderdale, it is also the part of the world where your usual support network is furthest away and where getting compliance right before departure matters most.
Before a vessel departs on a Pacific itinerary, a structured review of the vessel's SMS, crew certification compliance, ISM/LY3 status, ISPS arrangements, and flag state documentation gives the management company and owner confidence that the voyage starts from a sound compliance position — not one that only becomes visible when port state control arrives in Auckland or Sydney.
An independent internal audit of the Safety Management System against LY3 or ISM Code requirements — conducted by someone who has operated commercially under these exact codes and flags — surfaces real nonconformities in a way a generic checklist review does not. Delivered onboard anywhere in the region, or as a desktop document review prior to departure.
Most management companies' primary DPA is based in Europe or the Americas. New Zealand and Australian business hours run directly across the European overnight — which is exactly when a vessel on passage in the South Pacific is most likely to need shore-side support. A contracted backup DPA in this timezone closes that gap properly, rather than relying on a primary DPA being available at 0300 European time.
DPA services →CSO appointment for vessels on Pacific itineraries — ensuring the Ship Security Plan is current, port-specific security measures are in place before arrival, and a qualified CSO is reachable at all times from within the right timezone. Essential for vessels calling at Pacific island states, PNG, and Indonesian ports where ISPS compliance is actively monitored.
CSO services →The majority of the world's commercially operated superyachts are registered under Red Ensign Group flags. Our founding principal spent two decades in command on commercially operated vessels under Isle of Man, Cayman Islands, and Channel Islands registries — working directly with their surveyors, Recognised Organisations, and flag state requirements. That operational experience translates directly into more targeted internal audits, more realistic gap analysis, and more useful pre-inspection preparation than a consultant approaching these registries from the outside.
The largest Red Ensign Group registry for commercially operated superyachts. Direct command experience under the IoM flag, including working with IoM-appointed Recognised Organisations and surveyors.
A major registry for large commercial yachts. Command experience under the Cayman flag, with direct familiarity with CISR requirements and the Recognised Organisations they delegate to.
Channel Islands flag experience across both Guernsey and Jersey registries. Familiar with the survey and inspection processes of both administrations.
New Zealand is the most common first port of call for superyachts arriving on a South Pacific circuit. Auckland's Viaduct Harbour and Westhaven Marina, and Whangarei's Norsand Boatyard — a premier refit destination — see significant superyacht traffic. We are based in the north Waikato and can be onboard at short notice across the upper North Island.
Based in the SE Queensland marine precinct, with Boatworks and GCCM nearby and straightforward access to Rivergate Marina & Shipyard on the Brisbane River. Sydney, Melbourne, and the Whitsundays are all reachable same-day by internal flight for onboard audit work.
French Polynesia (Papeete, Bora Bora, Marquesas), Cook Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia — the classic Pacific circuit. Remote desktop compliance support and DPA coverage throughout, with onboard attendance for vessels in these waters subject to applicable entry requirements.
For management companies preparing a vessel for a Pacific delivery — from the Mediterranean via the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, or from the Caribbean via Panama — we offer remote pre-departure compliance review and gap analysis well ahead of arrival in the region. Getting the SMS and ISPS arrangements right before the passage is far easier than fixing them in Tahiti.
Statutory ISM/ISPS/LY3 certification audits — the ones that produce your DOC, SMC, ISSC, or LY3 compliance certificate — are conducted by Recognised Organisations authorised by your flag state. We do not conduct those statutory audits on behalf of any RO or flag state — that is their role, not ours. What we provide is the preparation work that makes those statutory audits straightforward: internal audits that surface nonconformities while there is still time to close them, DPA and CSO services that satisfy the shore-side requirements, and pre-inspection gap analysis drawn from genuine operational experience under the same flag states and codes your vessel operates under.
If you are unsure which RO to approach for your flag state and vessel type, we can assist with that too — see our RO information page for a full list of Recognised Organisations operating in this region.
